Mahesh Babu’s recent conversations with media friends and public left a question on the exact rationale behind Jagapathi Babu being roped in his father’s role for ‘Srimanthudu.’ When Mahesh himself said, he was apprehensive early on Jagapathi Babu accepting the character, it hints something more.
In the 25 years long career, Jagapathi Babu skinned into versatile characterizations but playing a dad to Mahesh Babu is a different ball game. ‘Do you know, I am 53 now and certainly old enough to play dad roles. Mahesh looks very young (though he is entering into 40 this year) and this is enough to be my son,’ he says.
After the closure of Sobhan Babu’s era in industry, it was Jagapathi Babu shouldered the hardship to fulfill the demands of family audience in association with directors like EVV Sathyanarayana, SV Krishna Reddy, Bheemaneni Srinivas Rao etc. Recently, he is selecting wide range of characters from antagonists to supporting roles without any narrow mindedness.
‘The ‘Srimanthudu’ offer isn’t really a hard call to accept. As Mahesh Babu is hero, that’s the most alluring factor for me. He plays a wealthy NRI returns to India for adopting his native village. My time as hero who dances round the trees is over,’ Jagapathi Babu accepts the reality. That’s the character of a true gentleman.
