Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission has announced yesterday that Tea would be declared as National Drink of India by April 17 of 2013. This isn’t going to be non controversial because the dietary guidelines of many Nutritionists warn the consumption of Tea as dangerous to health. Primary counter against Ahluwalia is that a National Drink should make a person healthy and should not cause any health problems like what Tea would do.
Then the best possible alternative for the status of National Drink would be Coconut Water or even Milk or Lassi or Lemon Water. There has been a wide scale debate going on in all the social networking platforms with people from different regions putting up their own thesis in selection of a National Drink. Apparently, Ahluwalia wanted the declaration to commence with 212th Birth Anniversary of first Assam Tea Planter Maniram Dewan who was also a leader from Assam during the Sepoy Mutiny phase of Indian struggle for Independence.
