The Telugu Desam legislators staged a dharna at Gunpark on Friday criticizing the Central decision to raise urea price.
Protesting against the 10 per cent raise in urea prices, the legislators said the increase would impose a burden of Rs 180 crore on farmers in the State. They said the price hike worked out to Rs 30 on a 50-kg bag.
They termed the hike in urea price as ‘unwarranted’ and a burden on the farmers who were already committing suicides and feared it would result in fall in agriculture production.
They said the Tdp would take up the issue in Parliament.
They urged Centre to reconsider its decision and take steps for adequate supply of fertilizers to farming community.
They also urged the government to make efforts for preventing hoarding of fertilizers by traders to create artificial scarcity and raise the prices in the market.
