CBFC Tightens Censor Rules

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has introduced stricter instructions for filmmakers applying for censor certificates. According to its latest advisory, producers must submit films in their complete and final form, including finished background music, sound mixing, visual effects, graphics and accessibility features. Incomplete versions may no longer be accepted for review.
Until now, some filmmakers submitted unfinished prints for censor screening while completing pending work like background music, VFX and graphics in parallel. This helped production houses manage tight release schedules. However, the new instructions make it clear that films containing temporary placeholders, scratch scores or incomplete technical elements can face delays or even rejection.
The CBFC has also clarified that a film's title is not automatically approved when an application is submitted. The Examining Committee or Revising Committee can still recommend changes after reviewing it. Another important point is that an announced theatrical release date will not speed up the certification process, as every film must go through the prescribed statutory procedures.
These changes could create additional pressure on Telugu filmmakers, especially those working with tight release deadlines. Any delay in receiving a censor certificate can affect trailer launches, promotions, advance bookings and theatre planning. Producers are now advised to apply well in advance and keep the final version ready. Well on the other hand, it also makes the makers to have a perfect release plan with completed film even before going to censor. It remains to be seen how the industry adjusts to these stricter certification requirements.
