Jana Nayagan Leak Hits Producers With 70 Crore Loss

Vijay’s much-awaited Tamil film Jana Nayagan has run into big trouble. The movie was leaked online on April 9, 2026, before its theatre release. This leak has cost the makers around 70 crore. The film is directed by H Vinoth and made by KVN Productions and Thespian Films. It is said to be Vijay’s last film before he joins politics full time. Fans were very excited, but the leak and CBFC delays have hurt the film badly. The story talks about identity, survival, and a mother-child bond.
Prime Video had bought the digital rights for 120 crore. But after the leak and the release getting pushed, the platform cancelled the deal. That was a huge shock for the team. KVN Productions then spoke to other OTT players. ZEE5 is now in talks and has offered 50 crore for the post-theatrical rights. That is less than half of the first deal. The 70 crore drop is one of the biggest losses due to piracy in recent times. The leak also hit theatre plans. Some distributors have backed out or reduced their offers. Trade expert Tirupur Subramaniam said the total loss could go up to 300-400 crore if theatre and satellite deals also suffer.
After the leak, KVN Productions took legal steps. Their team put out a notice asking people not to share or download the leaked footage. The police have made several arrests. A freelance editor named Uma Shankar was booked for stealing footage from an editing studio and posting it online. His bail request was rejected by the Madras High Court. On social media, fans are upset. Many are asking others not to watch pirated copies and to wait for the official release. Some local TV channels also aired the film illegally, and FIRs were filed.
The film was first planned for Pongal on January 9, 2026. But CBFC clearance did not come in time. Now reports say it may release in mid-May 2026. The market screening for Jana Nayagan is set for May 14 at Cannes Marche du Film to find global buyers. Despite the setback, the makers hope the film will still do well once it hits theatres. Piracy is a big worry for the industry, and this case shows how fast a leak can damage a big-budget movie.
