Kamal Haasan Responds to Elon Musk Over Starlink’s India Entry

Elon Musk’s Starlink ambitions in India have sparked fresh debate after the billionaire questioned the delays surrounding the satellite internet service’s commercial launch. Musk suggested that powerful business interests could be influencing the process and raised questions about Mukesh Ambani’s role in India’s telecom landscape, bringing the spotlight back to competition between global technology companies and domestic telecom giants.
The controversy comes as India prepares for greater competition in satellite-based internet services. Starlink has been working to enter the Indian market, where Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel already have a strong presence. However, satellite internet operators must meet government licensing, spectrum, security and other regulatory requirements before rolling out commercial services across the country.
Actor and Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan has entered the discussion, emphasising that neither Indian nor foreign billionaires should determine the country’s policy decisions. His position centres on fair competition, consumer interests and the need to make satellite internet affordable, particularly for people living in remote and underserved regions where conventional broadband connectivity remains limited.
Kamal Haasan’s remarks also bring attention to India’s wider digital connectivity goals, including the implementation of the BharatNet programme. While Starlink’s potential entry could expand internet access in difficult to reach areas, questions remain over pricing, infrastructure, national security and regulatory oversight. The debate ultimately highlights the challenge of encouraging private investment while ensuring that internet access remains accessible and that policy decisions serve the public interest.
