Dorothy(2026) Movie: Technical Review
Dorothy story is penned by Karthik Subbaraj. He is known to come with hard hitting films and even Dorothy is nothing new. He chose to address the controversial topics in the story. He narrated the first half highlighting the friendship, bonding and emotions between the two friends. With his humor that is black, Karthik Subbaraj lived up to his reputation.
He then makes a drastic shift in the second half. While he touched on the contentious issues in the second half, at times, he ended up confusing viewers. Through Dorothy, he did not deviate from one topic to another but chose to address in all the problems in a powerful, hardhitting and logical manner.
He showed clarity of thought in his narration and this made a powerful impact on the viewers. He addressed casteism, violence, patriarchy, gender politics and discrimination. After highlighting the major problem or the controversial issue, he normalised it in the society. Though he did not glorify for the LGBT rights, he just normalised it.
However for all the powerful elements, Karthik Subbaraj's narration turned out to be preachy. The story and narration irritate all sections of viewers not only conservatives but also those who fight for the rights of LGBTQIA+ allies.
The cinematography of S Thirunavukkarasu is captivating. He showed the raw and rustic elements in a natural and impactful manner. He used the camera angles capturing the expressions of various actors to perfection. He also showed the fights in a chilling way. Music maestro Ilayaraja added value and soul to the film with his music and background score elevating the emotions. The editing of Ganesh Siva is fine and could have been better at times. Production values are grand.

Dorothy(2026) Movie: Rating Analysis
Altogether, Dorothy turns out to be a bold take on contentious issues. Karthik Subbaraj should be complimented for touching a controversial topic. He is aided by the top performances from the cast and crew. However, Karthik Subbaraj after the interesting first half and the bold second half, however failed to address the problems in the more powerful manner.
Some characters are underwritten and some of the dialogues delivered by them looked forced as if praising the director. Some of the dialogues turned preachy and everything turns preachy and predictable after the passage of time. Karthik Subbaraj in his excitement to add more power and punch failed to with his failure in clarity of thought on where and how to end the film and which direction he should take if forward. Considering all these elements, Cinejosh goes with a 2.25 rating for Dorothy.
