Gunasekhar started his journey as an assistant to D V Narasaraju, Kranthi Kumar, and Ram Gopal Varma. He learned the craft of filmmaking by working with these well known names. In 1992 he turned director with Laathi. The film had a strong impact of Ram Gopal Varma’s style, but Gunasekhar added his own voice to the story. Laathi won many awards and gave him the Nandi Award for Best First Film Director. He followed it with the family drama Sogasu Chooda Tarama. The film had a fresh and bold theme for its time and won the Nandi Award for Best Film. These early films showed his courage to try new subjects and his skill in telling them well.

Rise With Mainstream And Commercial Success

Gunasekhar then made Ramayanam with child artists. The film was unique and gave Jr NTR his first full-length role as Lord Rama. After that he moved to big commercial films with Chudalani Vundi starring Megastar Chiranjeevi. He brought DTS sound technology to Telugu cinema for the first time and gave the film a stylish and rich look. The movie became a blockbuster. He continued with Manoharam, which dealt with terrorism and won Nandi Awards. The real turning point came in 2003 with Okkadu starring Mahesh Babu. The film was an all-time blockbuster and changed the career of both Mahesh Babu and Gunasekhar. He then worked again with Mahesh Babu for Arjun and Sainikudu, proving his command over large-scale action love stories.

Recent Works And Return To Mythology

Gunasekhar is known for his peculiar style of making grandeur films with rich visuals and strong emotions. He does not stick to one genre. He has made socio political films, mythologies, action dramas, family stories, and social dramas. In 2015 he directed Rudhramadevi with Anushka Shetty. It was a historical film made in 3D and showed his love for big canvas storytelling. Recently, he made the mythological film Shaakuntalam with Samantha. Now he has come up with Euphoria, a new age social drama. The film connects with the youth and talks about present day issues in a fresh and lively way. This shows he keeps changing with time while keeping his signature grand style.

Gunasekhar stands as one of the few directors who can handle both mass films and mythological epics with the same ease. His work has range, scale, and a clear personal mark.
