He repeated his words, even more emphatically, after a gasp of air. His eyes blazing, the smile spread across his face, he again shouted at the top of his voice “WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!! INDIA HAS WON!!!!”
From among the thousands who had gathered to vent their joy at the Charminar, another voice shouted “India has won!”
Many of the fans, mostly youngsters did not know how to react. They simply screamed to echo their joy at the fact that the 28 year wait had finally ended.
India brushed off the Lankan challenge in the finals of the ICC World Cup 2011 and clinched the trophy, quite convincingly.
An old man, well into his sixties, a smile as broad as possible, his beard grey and his prayer cap slightly askew, just pumped his fist in the air to symbolise his joy.
He did not seem to notice the almost incessant firecrackers bursting quite nearby, nor the screams of unbridled joy which echoed across the entire stretch of road around the Charminar.
A ‘marfa’ team arrived on the scene as the ‘teen maar’ beats prompted the gathering to start an impromptu jig. A lot of policemen were seen joining in the dance.
The celebrations were so wild that most of the people were even unaware that the some of the residue of the sweets they had stuffed into each other’s mouths were stuck to the lips or chins.
Meanwhile, the crowd which had assembled at the GMC Balayogi Stadium in Gachchibowl went wild as Team India captain MS Dhoni hit the winning six.
The Deejay there started numbers to which the crowds danced with abandon.
The scenes were electric, and this correspondent saw a pregnant lady waving her hands in tune with the music.
The almost incessant blaring of horns, the screaming youngsters with the National flag proudly waved or draped on their shoulders, the motorcycles zipping in and out, all were incredible displays of unbridled joy.
