Best PICTURE

All 9,579 members can cast ballots for Best Picture

“Initial Magic Number”: 871

Five branches vote only in this race (and can take part in the selection process for Animated Feature and Foreign-Language Feature if they so choose)

the only category in which you need more than 100 votes to secure a nomination are Best Picture and the four acting categories, which are voted for by the largest number of people. Everyone has a say on Best Picture. This collegiate voting partially explains the discrepancies that often happen between categories, for example when a Best Film nominee doesn't get a Best Director nod, or vice versa.
