Tamil Nadu Plans to Bring Back 6 AM Movie Shows Big Relief for Kollywood

Tamil Nadu’s film industry has recently asked the state government to allow cinema theatres to screen movies from 6 am, bringing early morning shows back into focus. Producer bodies, theatre owners and distributors raised the request during a meeting with Cinematography Minister Rajmohan in Chennai on October 29.

They have sought permission to run shows from 6 am until 2 am, giving theatres room for five or six screenings across Tamil Nadu. Industry representatives say the schedule could help manage crowded release days, offer audiences more choices and reduce the advantage enjoyed by films releasing in neighbouring states.

Early morning shows were once a big part of Tamil cinema, with star films opening at 4 am or even earlier. However, Tamil Nadu tightened the rules in 2023 after a fan died during celebrations around Ajith Thunivu’s early screening. Since then, regular shows have generally started only from 9 am.

The meeting also covered an eight week gap between theatrical and OTT releases, a streaming platform, subsidies for small films and support for unreleased projects. The minister said the proposals would be discussed with the government. For now, the 6 am show request is a demand, not an approved rule yet.
