‘Ghazi,’ the anxious project from PVP Cinema and Matinee Entertainments slated for release on February 17th is based on an enigmatic subject about the sinking of Pakistan submarine PNS Ghazi in Visakhapatnam waters. For beginners, PNS Ghazi is a diesel cum electric fast attacking Pakistan submarine used during 1971 Indo-Pak war.
According to 1971 war reports, Indian Navy played crucial role in winning the battle. During those times INS Vikrant, India’s aircraft carrier was under Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam. Pakistan has sent PNS Ghazi on a secret mission to attack INS Vikrant thinking that it was stationed at Vizag while it was actually located near Port Blair.
Till the time Ghazi approached Visakhapatnam harbor, Pakistan intelligence was uninformed about Vikrant’s absence. In a hopeless situation, Pakistan tried to use Ghazi for random strikes on Vizag.
On Dec 5th, 1971 early morning when INS Akshay was on the surveillance duty in Vizag open waters, officers on board found Ghazi debris including a large oil slick. Later Indian Navy formulated a row of investigative committees to explore the reasons behind Ghazi sinking but none of them had a substantial theory with sufficient evidences to prove. After 46 years, ‘Ghazi’ is the film coming up from writer, director Sankalp Reddy starring Rana in lead and entire India is awaiting to know what this mystery is all about?
