Suriya Scene Faces Theatre Shortage

Suriya’s Scene is heading for a November 6 Diwali release, but the film is facing a major challenge even before its first show. Despite having quality promotional material that has connected with a section of movie lovers, the overall pre release buzz is not particularly strong. The bigger concern is the limited number of theatres.

Tamil Nadu is where the screen shortage could hurt Scene the most. The film is reportedly getting less than half of the available screens, with Nayanthara’s Mookuthi Amman 2 receiving a wide release through Red Giant Movies. Jailer 2 continues to occupy theatres, while Ramayana is taking a sizeable share of multiplex screens, leaving less room for Suriya’s film.

The situation is also challenging in the Telugu states, where Aadarsha Kutumbam is still running after its October 30 release. NVR Cinemas is releasing Scene in Telugu, but Ramayana, distributed by Dil Raju’s Sri Venkateswara Creations at regular ticket prices, is expected to dominate theatre allocation. Karnataka faces a similar situation, while North India is likely to be heavily occupied by Ramayana.

Kerala remains Scene’s biggest relief, with the film getting a comparatively better screen count and carrying expectations of Suriya’s biggest ever opening in the state. However, fewer theatres in other important markets could restrict its opening collections. The promotional content has found appreciation among a particular audience, but that has not yet translated into huge overall buzz. Scene now needs strong audience feedback to gain additional shows and theatres during the Diwali weekend.
