Japanese audiences have embraced Indian cinema for decades, making Japan a top overseas market. Dubbed versions and cultural appeal drive steady growth. Rajinikanth’s Muthu in 1998 earned Rs 23.5 crore, introducing mass Indian films and setting an early benchmark for future blockbusters in Japan.

S.S. Rajamouli’s RRR later broke that record with nearly Rs 24 crore in Japan, becoming the highest-grossing Indian film there. Recent big releases like Kalki 2898 AD, Devara, Salaar and Pushpa 2 performed well but could not surpass RRR’s historic Japanese box office run.

Aditya Dhar’s spy thriller Dhurandhar Part One releases in Japan on July 10. The film earned around Rs 1,300 crore in India and trade analysts expect strong action appeal to draw Japanese viewers. It aims to challenge RRR’s long-standing collection record in the market.

Teja Sajja’s fantasy drama Mirai follows on August 21. Known for grand VFX and mythology, it made Rs 150 crore domestically. With rising interest in Indian visual spectacles, both films could create new milestones. Fans wait to see if either can top RRR in Japan.
