Hyderabad, Sept 25 :
Alarmed over the increasing acid attacks on women, the Andhra Pradesh government is mulling special legislation to deal with such crimes and ensure stringent punishment to the guilty. Talking to media persons at the Secretariat on Friday, the Home Minister, Smt P Sabita Indra Reddy said that she would hold talks with the Central Home Minister in this regard.
“A decision will be taken after due consultations with the Union Home Ministry,” she said while underlining the need for special legislation to deal with such crimes.
Reddy, the first woman Home Minister in the state’s history, said that stern action would be taken against those responsible for acid attacks.
She said that two ordinances would be soon promulgated to provide deterrent punishment to perpetrators of violence, including acid attacks against women. The Minister said that the officers concerned had been asked to prepare the ordinances for providing stringent punishment on those playing with the lives of women.
Stressing the need for counseling of students in educational institutions to curb the social menace of ragging and eve-teasing, she said parents had an important role in upbringing their children.
