Toxic English Version Is A Complete Washout

The English version of Yash starrer Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups was conceived as an ambitious attempt to expand Indian cinema’s international footprint. The makers developed Kannada and English versions with global audiences in mind, hoping to build a wider theatrical market beyond India and strengthen the film’s overseas commercial prospects.

The project was initially scheduled for a March 19 release but was later postponed, with the makers citing uncertainties in the Middle East and the need for a broader worldwide rollout. Despite the revised strategy and considerable expectations surrounding its international positioning, the English version reportedly failed to generate the theatrical revenue required to support the film’s ambitious budget.

The English version has reportedly performed poorly in India, collecting only around ₹2 lakh gross, making its domestic theatrical contribution negligible. Meanwhile, the Indian language versions are said to have earned approximately ₹315 crore worldwide so far, against an estimated ₹800 crore break even target, leaving the overall project facing a substantial financial deficit.

Toxic’s commercial struggles highlight the challenges involved in taking an Indian film to global audiences. International positioning alone cannot guarantee success without strong content and positive word of mouth. Despite Yash’s popularity and the film’s large scale production, its reported theatrical performance suggests that the ambitious global strategy has not delivered the expected commercial returns.
