In a recent conversation, Muralitharan disclosed the challenging circumstances that led to Sethupathi's departure from the project. He revealed that Sethupathi's family had received threats, placing immense pressure on the actor. Muralitharan also shared the backstory of how Sethupathi had initially been recommended for the role by the film's director, M. S. Sripathy.

Muralitharan recounted, "During my time at the IPL, my director mentioned that Vijay Sethupathi was staying in the same hotel for a shoot. He offered to arrange a meeting, and though initially hesitant, Vijay, who admired me as a cricketer, agreed to meet. He allocated two hours five days later, after 8 p.m., for a script narration. Upon hearing it, he expressed genuine enthusiasm for the film, stating that he couldn't miss such a unique opportunity and was eager to be part of the project. Subsequently, we finalized the deal with him, and the production house also came on board."

The cricketer went on to explain that the controversy surrounding the film was unrelated to its content, emphasizing that "800" is a sports movie that tells the true story of a remarkable individual. Muralitharan stressed that the movie had no political affiliations or intentions.

The controversy surrounding Vijay Sethupathi's involvement in "800" stemmed from allegations that Muralitharan had supported his government during the civil war involving the LTTE. In response to the mounting pressure and threats, Sethupathi made the difficult decision to step away from the film."800" remains a significant project that highlights the extraordinary life of Muttiah Muralitharan, focusing on his cricketing journey rather than delving into political matters.
