Pradesh Congress Committee president Botsa Satyanarayana on Thursday advised the party leaders not to run for posts and focus on strengthening the party at the grass-root level.

Speaking after launching the membership drive at Gandhi Bhavan here, Botsa said that the party leaders should ensure that the government's schemes reach the door steps of the people. He also asked them to take active part in the membership drive. Claiming that presently there about 40 lakh members of the Congress party in the State, he said this year the party has changes the membership from three categories to just one.

In his speech, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar advised the PCC chief to train the party cadre at the grass root level. He said that the party activists should be aware of all government's schemes and they should take the same to the people. He also advised that the services of women, Backward Classes, minorities and youth should be utilised to strengthen the party.

Kiran Kumar Reddy claimed that Congress was a popular party, especially in the rural areas of the State. Citing an instance, he said a family in Krishna district constructed a school building at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore and handed over the same to the Congress Government while he was touring the district as part of Indiramma Baata programme.

Rajya Sabha member K Chiranjeevi said that the State was facing a volatile political situation and therefore, the party cadre should be more active to counter the opposition parties. Former Chief Minister Nadendla Bhaskar Rao asked the cadre to prove their leadership abilities from the grassroots levels.

Earlier, Botsa launched the membership drive by signing his form. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar, Bhaskar Rao, former PCC presidents M Satyanarayana Rao and K Keshava Rao, AICC Secretary P Sudhakar Reddy, Secunderabad MP M Anjan Kumar Yadav, former minister Mohamma Ali Shabbir and other leaders also signed their membership forms.
