The 68th National Film Awards brought delight to the winners and this time South filmmakers got thrilled as finally, their efforts got recognition instead of getting eclipsed as used to happen in the past. Suriya's Soorarai Pottru and Ajay Devgn's Tanhaji won the best actor award and Soorarai Pottru won the best film award. Color Photo from Tollywood won the best film award while Natyam won the best choreography and costumes award.
The award-winning films trigger the discussion as to whether critics are failing to judge the award-winning films professionally. Barring Suriya's Soorarai Pottru which got unanimous ratings from critics and movie lovers alike, other films like Ajay Devgn's Tanhaji, Color Photo, and Natyam from Tollywood got mixed reviews.
Many branded Tanhaji as a mediocre film giving it a 2 rating with captions like ' Propaganda Weighs Down an Already Mediocre Film'. The same is the case with Color Photo. The film got mixed reviews and many rated it just around 2. In both cases, the makers ripped apart the directors. Even Natyam was panned for bad direction but the film got shortlisted for international festivals. The only saving grace is critics are unanimous that the film's choreography was top-class. This shows that critics have a lot to go before they attain credibility.
