Mani Ratnam The Craftsman Of Evergreen Classics

Mani Ratnam began his film journey without any cinema background. He is an MBA graduate who entered direction with passion and fresh ideas. His first film was the Kannada movie Pallavi Anupallavi in 1983. He then made the Malayalam film Unaroo and entered Tamil cinema with Pagal Nilavu. After a few Tamil films, he found his own voice with Mouna Ragam in 1986. The film was a blockbuster and showed his unique style of telling stories. People praised the way he handled emotions and relationships. Mouna Ragam was dubbed into Telugu and from then all his films reached Telugu audiences too.
Rise With Powerful Stories And National Fame
Mani Ratnam’s rise came with strong films that mixed art and mass appeal. He made Nayakan with Kamal Haasan and it became a cult classic. The film was even named in Time’s list of world’s best 100 films. Both Nayakan and Anjali went as India’s official entries to the Oscars. He then worked with Nagarjuna for Geethanjali, a love story between two terminally ill people. It was a big hit and remains the only Telugu film he has directed. Films like Agni Natchathiram, Thalapathy with Rajinikanth and Mammootty, and Anjali showed his grip on drama, emotion, and character detail. Thalapathy took inspiration from Karna and Duryodhana of Mahabharatam and became a huge success.
Unique Style And Signature Themes
Mani Ratnam has a peculiar style that is hard to copy. He shows human emotions in a real and subtle way. His characters feel natural and their conflicts come from simple life situations. He does not copy others and you rarely see other directors’ influence in his work. He frames shots with beauty and uses music and silence to tell the story. His films often deal with love, politics, family, and society. He made the Terrorism Trilogy with Roja, Bombay, and Dil Se. He also made a Romantic Trilogy with Mouna Ragam, Alai Payuthey or Sakhi, and O Kadhal Kanmani or Ok Bangaram. His work with Ilaiyaraaja and later A R Rahman created timeless music.
Body Of Work Spanning Four Decades
In forty years Mani Ratnam has given many classics. Roja and Bombay gave him nationwide fame. Iruvar or Iddaru told the story of MGR, Karunanidhi, and Jayalalithaa and was praised for its craft. He made Hindi films like Dil Se with Shah Rukh Khan and Guru with Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. Films like Kannathil Muthamittal or Amrutha, Alai Payuthey or Sakhi, and Raavanan showed his range. He blends strong writing, visual beauty, and great performances. Each film feels fresh even today because he keeps up with the times and speaks to new audiences.
Latest Works And Continuing Legacy
Mani Ratnam never went out of fashion. His recent films Ok Bangaram, Nawab, and the two part epic Ponniyin Selvan prove he can still make quality cinema that connects with all ages. Ponniyin Selvan was a grand historical film that won praise for scale and storytelling. He is now busy with a new love story starring Vijay Sethupathi. Fans wait to see how he will show romance and human bonds this time. His journey from Pallavi Anupallavi to today shows constant growth and courage to try new ideas.
