Re-Release Trend Slows Down in Telugu Cinema

The craze for re-releases in Telugu cinema is slowing down. Over the last few years, old films of star heroes returned to theatres and got huge love from fans. The trend started with Mahesh Babu’s films and was later picked up by fans of other stars. Many classics got big openings without much promotion. But now the response is weak. New re-releases are not bringing the same crowd to theatres.
Junior NTR’s Oosaravelli is a clear example. The film was released again for NTR’s birthday with special shows and events. Still, the box office numbers were low. There was not much talk about the collections. Mahesh Babu’s Atithi also did not meet expectations. The team added new elements and planned special screenings, but bookings stayed flat. Only a few single screens saw some crowd. The huge rush seen with past re-releases was missing.
Both Oosaravelli and Atithi were directed by Surender Reddy. Their weak run has started a debate in the industry. Mahesh Babu’s 1 Nenokkadine also faced a similar fate. The film had good buzz on social media before its release. Yet ticket sales did not pick up, and fans were disappointed. Earlier re-releases like Jalsa, Pokiri, and Kushi had houseful shows and record numbers for old films.
The main reason looks simple. Too many re-releases in a short time have reduced the excitement. Fans cannot watch every old film again in theatres. The surprise factor is gone. Also, not all films have repeat value on the big screen. Unless it is a true classic or a cult hit, audience interest is low. For now, the re-release wave seems to be over, and makers may need to be more careful with future picks.
