With the entry of Amazon Prime in India, OTT boom has started and within a short period global streaming giant Netflix too opened its shop in India. Both, Prime and Netflix competed with each other in gaining the attention of viewers. As Amazon is more inclined towards Indian content and gave more priority to it, it quickly occupied the top place. Whereas Netflix tried to bring global content to Indian viewers and even tried to make Indian content to cater other countries.
Netflix has scored the first success and kickstarted the web series culture in India with its smash hit Sacred Games starring Said Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Amazon quickly jumped into the game and made blockbuster series The Family Man and Mirzapur. Meanwhile other streaming platforms also started churning out different concept based series.
Sony LIV delivered stunning Scam 1992 followed by Scam 2003. Disney Plus Hotstar too made crowd pleasing content with Rudra : The Edge Of Darkness starring Ajay Devgn and Raashii Khanna, Criminal Justice: Behind the Closed Doors. Hotstar, ZEE5 and even Netflix at times make popular international web series in Indian version. But, Amazon Prime prefers original content.
In a recent survey, Amazon Prime's Farzi starring Shahid Kapoor and Vijay Sethupathi is the highest viewed Indian web series. Farzi which wa release in February this year has already crossed 4 crore views and stands at top position. Hotstar's Ajay Devgn starrer Rudra: The Edge Of Darkness stands at top 2 with 3.5 Crore viewers. Prime's Mirzapur and Panchayat occupied fourth and fifth places with 3.2 crores views and 2.96 views respectively. The reason behind Netflix's absence from the list is it has comparatively less subscribers form India.
