Mysore cut off with Ooty

Nanjangud (Mysore):-

The National Highway-212 that joins two major tourist destinations in South India – Mysore in Karnataka and Ooty in Tamil Nadu – has been cut off from the world at Mallanamule matta of Nanjangud taluk.

Nearly, one-kilometer long stretch from Mallanamule matta towards Nanjangud town has developed deep life-sized cracks and a bridge was also on the verge of collapse. Officials told TNN here on Thursday that it would take at least two months to relay the road. The Nanjangud tahasildar, Mr Suresh Kumar, who visited the spot, said that there were multiple cracks on the bridge and it can sink at any moment.

“The floodwater has loosened the soil underneath road causing vibration. The traffic is being diverted at the moment,” he explained. With Kabini reservoir in H D Kote taluk of the district crossed all danger levels and discharging a whopping 70,000 cusecs with an equal inflow, the threat seems much larger.

“The situation can worsen, if the outflow of the reservoir touches 80,000 cusecs, which is a certainty as Met Department in Wayanad of Kerala predicting heavy rain in the next three days,” said Mr Suresh Kumar. All ready six villages including Bukhalli, Emmavu, Thoremavu, Kulankannavadu, Kathavadipura and Yegegi, have been submerged, nearly, 600 families have been affected and are being shifted to ‘Ghanji Kendras’.

Motorboats have been deployed for the purpose, the official said. Meanwhile, a teenager Mahadev (22) was washed away when he tried to come out of the swirling Kapila floodwaters near 'Snana Ghatta' in Nanjangud. Besides, the Kabini Bridge, which is 270-year-old and considered as world’s oldest Railway Bridge, has become a major tourist attraction with floodwater gushing through it.

Meanwhile, water level in the Krishnaraja Sagar Reservoir is rapidly rising. It has now stood at 110.30 ft as against 124.80 ft with an inflow of 56,360 and outflow of 3,749. The officials said that the reservoir would be full with a week time.
