People across the world talk about Oscars Awards and those in the film fraternity aspire to win at least one Oscar Award in their lifetime. Though India churns out highest number of films every year, it did not get many Oscars.
John Bailey, President of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), speaking at an event in Mumbai after revealing his intention to start a unit of Oscars Academy in the city, came with a shocker on Indian cinema.
The Oscar Head said, “Indian cinema is one of the richest in the world, owing to its numerous cultures, languages and historical narratives. I want to learn more about the movies (made here). There is a need for the rest of the world to know (about Indian films). The fantasy of Bollywood musicals (released abroad) does not give us a deep understanding of your culture and values. We do not know about Indian cinema except from the films of the Golden Age, such as those by Satyajit Ray, and it’s not totally our fault. There is a need to put more Indian films out to the world.”
Bailey visited India along with his wife, American film editor Carol Littleton, became the first president to visit the country. He said, “Except for some, Indian films are not that well known and this visit to India is a small part on our side to change that.”
