Slamming the United Progressive Alliance Government for tapping the telephones of prominent political leaders, Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday demanded explanation from Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Addressing the party workers, he said the tapping of telephones of prominent persons and political leaders was illegal.

He said the tapping was in violation of Article 21 of the Constitution, which assures protection of life and liberty to every citizen.

“The Congress is infringing on the fundamental rights of the citizens, which is a disgrace to the democracy,” he said.

Naidu demanded a clear-cut statement from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the issue.

The TDP would fight for the protection of the Fundamental Rights of citizens, he said.
