Gone are the days of healthy competition in film market. Though it has been cut-throat, there was a line the producers and distributors used to trek in earlier days.
Now the line has been wafer thin and many times erased with the sole intention of one-upmanship.
Vishwaroopam was also caught in an imbroglio as Kamal Hassan wanted to release the film on DTH platform which was opposed by Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners’ Association. The release has to be postponed and will hit the screens this Friday.
Meanwhile, Kamal has moved the Competition Commission of India (CCI) alleging that the theatre owners are trying to restrict the release of his film.
Some people are trying to take advantage of the dominant market position to restrict the release of Vishwaroopam is the complaint which was accepted and CCI has referred the case to the Director General for further investigation.
CCI was in news earlier, with producers of Ajay Devagan-starrer Son of Sardar complaining against the makers of Jab Tak Hai Jaan of Shah Rukh Khan. CCI however, did not react in that case.
It remains to be seen if the CCI often intervenes in cases against those positioned at an advantageous mode in the market.
