Ramayana's Biggest Overseas Box Office Challenge

Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana is being mounted on a massive scale, with ambitions that extend far beyond the Indian market. However, its biggest battle may not be recreating the epic on screen but convincing international audiences to watch it in theatres.
According to trade reports, the film is targeting around $65 million in overseas collections to reach its reported breakeven expectations. North America alone is said to account for a $30 million target. The makers are also reportedly planning to spend around $10 million on overseas promotions, underlining their ambition to make the film a global theatrical event.
The Indian diaspora could provide a strong foundation for the film's overseas opening. But sustaining collections among audiences beyond that segment is a different challenge. The Ramayana has enormous cultural significance in India, but international viewers may not share the same emotional connection with the epic.
This is where the film's presentation, visual spectacle and storytelling become crucial. Massive promotions can create curiosity, but they cannot guarantee theatrical footfalls.
Ultimately, Ramayana's biggest test will be whether it can turn an Indian epic into a global box-office attraction.
