Ramayana’s OTT Move Could Change The Game

Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana is taking a different route for its digital release. Instead of the usual subscription model, the film is set to arrive on JioHotstar through a pay-per-view model after its theatrical run.
The move raises an interesting question. Could a big-budget Indian film change the way movies are released on OTT platforms?
Under the pay-per-view model, viewers will have to pay separately to watch the film rather than accessing it through their existing subscription. However, the pricing and digital release date are yet to be announced.
With Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, Ramayana is one of the most ambitious Indian film projects. The makers could be looking at a different way to monetise the film digitally, but convincing viewers to pay extra will be a challenge.
The pricing will play a crucial role. While fans may be willing to pay to experience a film of this scale at home, others might prefer to wait for a regular OTT release. Piracy could also become a concern if viewers feel the price is too high.
If the model works, it could encourage producers and streaming platforms to explore pay-per-view for other major releases. For now, Ramayana could become an important test of whether Indian audiences are ready to pay separately for films on OTT.
