Jailer 2: Rajini Is Back, But Where Is the Telugu Roar?

A Superstar film does not always need a massive promotional campaign to create noise. Sometimes, Rajinikanth's name is enough to get fans talking. That was part of the magic of Jailer, which turned into a major box-office success in Telugu states as well. But as Jailer 2 approaches its October 15 release, one question is becoming difficult to ignore: where is that excitement among Telugu audiences?
The first Jailer had more than Rajinikanth's star power working in its favour. Nelson Dilipkumar packaged the Superstar's screen presence with stylish action, memorable moments and a strong supporting cast. The film became a theatrical entertainer that audiences continued to revisit even after its release.
The sequel now has the advantage of that established brand. Yet the Telugu market does not appear to be buzzing with the same intensity as the film's Tamil market. The trailer has not sparked widespread conversation that usually builds momentum before a major star release, but the Telugu promotional push has also appeared relatively limited.
Ticket prices could add another hurdle. With an additional Rs 50 for single screens and Rs 75 for multiplexes approved in Andhra Pradesh during the opening week, audiences may think twice before choosing a dubbed sequel over other releases.
Of course, Rajinikanth is not a star who can be written off based on pre-release noise alone. Strong word of mouth could change the picture quickly. But this time, the real test for Jailer 2 is not simply bringing Tiger Muthuvel Pandian back to the big screen. It is making Telugu audiences feel that they cannot afford to miss him.
