Legendary Director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao Is No More

Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, one of Indian cinema’s most inventive filmmakers, passed away in Chennai on October 3, 2026, aged 94, following age related health issues. Across a career spanning more than five decades, he directed films in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi, constantly challenging conventional storytelling and expanding the creative possibilities of Indian cinema.

Born on September 21, 1931, in Udayagiri, Andhra Pradesh, Singeetham developed an early passion for literature, theatre and storytelling before entering cinema. He studied Physics at the University of Madras but eventually followed his artistic calling. His association with legendary filmmaker K.V. Reddy became a crucial foundation, working as an apprentice on classics including Mayabazar.

Singeetham’s filmography stands out for its remarkable diversity. Pushpaka Vimana demonstrated how a largely dialogue free narrative could become universally engaging through visuals, music and physical comedy, while Aditya 369 brought time travel and science fiction into mainstream Telugu cinema. Bhairava Dweepam further showcased his ability to blend folklore, fantasy, romance and visual imagination.

His creative partnership with Kamal Haasan produced several memorable experiments, including Pushpaka Vimana, Apoorva Sagodharargal and Michael Madana Kama Rajan. He also created notable cinema with Dr Rajkumar and worked across genres ranging from social dramas and family stories to fantasy, comedy and science fiction. His career demonstrates an extraordinary resistance to formula filmmaking.

Singeetham’s achievements were recognised with major honours, including National Film Awards for Dikkatra Parvathi and Pushpaka Vimana. He also received Nandi Awards for works including Mayuri, Brundavanam and Bhairava Dweepam, along with Karnataka State Film Awards and Filmfare Awards South. The Film Federation of India honoured him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

Even in his nineties, Singeetham refused to abandon his creative journey. His final directorial venture, Sing Geetham, was produced by Nag Ashwin and released in 2026, marking his return to filmmaking after a decade. The film emerged from a long cherished idea and followed a young man entering a mysterious village caught between modern development and traditional preservation.

Singeetham Srinivasa Rao’s passing closes an extraordinary chapter, but his cinema remains alive through generations of filmmakers and audiences. From silent storytelling to time travel, folklore and experimental comedy, he repeatedly proved that imagination has no boundaries. His legacy is not merely a list of films, but a lasting lesson in the courage to think differently.
