For 37 days, the nation has been gripped by outrage and protests following the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. In Kolkata, the epicenter of the outcry, demonstrations have been continuous, drawing participants from all walks of life. One such protest, a powerful street dance performance by actress and dancer Mokksha Sengupta, has captured the attention of the nation.
The performance, organized by an NGO in Santoshpur, South Kolkata on August 31st, featured Mokksha expressing her solidarity through a poignant dance set to a song by the renowned poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. The video, which has gone viral across social media platforms, showcases Mokksha's raw emotion and powerful artistic expression, resonating with the collective anger and grief over the incident.
Mokksha, a Bengali actress known for her work in South Indian cinema, hails from Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas. She initially pursued a career in teaching before transitioning to acting. She began her career in Bengali films before moving to South India, where she currently works in Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu cinema.
In an interview, Mokksha shared her reaction to the horrific incident and her motivation for participating in the street performance.
"When I first heard about the crime, I was in Hyderabad for a film release and was unaware of the situation. As soon as I learnt about this heinous act in Kolkata, I returned to my city to protest. I felt compelled to act because I am a sensitive person. As an artist, I chose street performance as my form of protest. I dedicated my time to participating in various protests, using my art to voice the concerns of the common people, standing as a representative of the city's residents," she said.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case on Tuesday, August 3rd, providing a platform for seeking justice for the victim and addressing the broader issues of safety and security for women in India.
Mokksha's impactful street performance serves as a testament to the power of art as a tool for protest and social change, highlighting the need for justice and accountability in the wake of the RG Kar case.
