Kangana Ranaut's highly anticipated film, Emergency, has been postponed once again, just days after the actress claimed that the film's clearance was stopped due to threats received by members of the Central Board of Film Certification. The film, written, directed, and produced by Ranaut, is a biographical political action thriller based on the 21-month period of the Indian Emergency. Ranaut will be seen playing the role of Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, in the film, which also marks her solo directorial debut.
The trailer of the film, released on August 14, gave a glimpse of the 'darkest times of democratic India' and showcased a gripping tale of historical events. The film features an ensemble cast, including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and the late Satish Kaushik. Emergency was earlier scheduled to release in November 2023, then postponed to June 2024, and recently to September 6, but has now been postponed again, with a new release date yet to be announced.
The film has been facing criticism from various Sikh groups, alleging that the film is an insult to the Sikh community. A group, Telangana Sikh Society, alleged that the film shows Sikhs as “terrorists and anti-nationals”, which is offensive to the community. Previously, the Delhi unit of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) asked for a ban on Emergency film and sent a legal notice to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Despite the controversy, Kangana Ranaut has not yet issued a statement on the film’s release, nor have the production houses, Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films. The film will stream on Netflix after its theatrical run, two months after its release.
