Legendary playback singer Dr Kj Yesudas celebrates his 84th birthday on Wednesday, January 10th. His legendary music journey spanning over seven decades proves his relentless passion for the 'craft'. The prolific singer, who has won the National Award for the Best Male Playback Singer eight times, has recorded more than 70,000 songs in various languages. The legend, who is referred as The Celestial Singer, has been honoured with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and many other esteemed awards.
Yesudas is considered as one of the greatest playback singers in the country, He began his music career with the Malayalam song "Jathi bhedam matha dwesham" in the year 1961 and sang in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films among other languages. Besides Indian languages like, he has also brought to life songs in Arabic, English, Latin, and even Russian during an over six decade long career.
Yesudas has crooned for memorable songs in Telugu too. He has many chartbuster songs in Mohan Babu combination. He is often referred to as Gaanagandharvan. He has also composed a number of Malayalam film songs during the 1970s and 1980s. In 2006, he sang 16 film songs in four South Indian languages on the same day at AVM Studio, Chennai.
