Prashanth Neel has DARK OCD. Prashanth Neel, known for his outstanding work in the KGF franchise, continues to demonstrate his filmmaking prowess, aiming to master his craft. With the highly anticipated Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire on the horizon, Prashanth Neel recently shed light on his inclination towards dark color palettes in his movies, a signature style evident in his previous works.
In a candid conversation with film critic Baradwaj Rangan, Prashanth Neel attributed his penchant for visually grim and dark themes to his Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). He candidly admitted, “The reason why KGF and Salaar look like that is that I have an OCD. I don’t like to wear clothes with too much color in them. I think it’s just a reflection of my personality on the screen."
Elaborating on the cinematography aspect, Prashanth mentioned that although Bhuvan Gowda, the cinematographer, often approaches the film sequences with a grey color palette, he doesn't always see eye to eye with the concept. Reflecting on the impact of this creative choice, he mused, “I have started to realize that it’s probably a very good thing or a very bad thing."
Addressing the comparisons between Salaar and KGF, Prashanth Neel acknowledged the discussions surrounding the uncanny resemblance. However, he justified the choice, emphasizing that Salaar's narrative demanded a dimly-lit environment to convey its gritty and dramatic essence. He explained, “We wanted it to be gritty. Though it was starting to replicate a little bit of what I did in KGF, I still stuck with it because it was going with the drama of the movie. I did not want to change that because of the opinions. (The dark visual tone) goes with the mood of the story."
Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire, featuring Prabhas in the lead role, boasts a stellar cast, including Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan, Jagapathi Babu, Bobby Simha, Shreya Reddy, Easwari Rao, and Dayanand Reddy. The epic action thriller is set to hit the big screens on December 22, adding to the excitement of the cinematic landscape, with its release closely following Shah Rukh Khan's much-anticipated film Dunki on December 21.
