High Court notices to SRK, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar over Gutka ad. In response to a contempt petition, the central government apprised the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad Court that notices have been issued to renowned actors Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, and Ajay Devgn regarding their endorsements for gutka companies.
The government's legal representative conveyed to the High Court on Friday that the Supreme Court is concurrently addressing the same matter, suggesting that the instant petition be dismissed. Following this submission, the bench scheduled the next hearing for May 9, 2024. Earlier, Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan's bench had directed the central government to make a decision on the petitioner's representation, who initially argued that action should be taken against actors and dignitaries receiving prestigious awards while promoting gutka companies.
Although the representation was submitted to the government on October 22, no action was taken, as asserted by the petitioner. Subsequently, in response to the contempt petition, the high Court had issued notice to the Cabinet Secretary of the central government. During the recent hearing, Deputy Solicitor General SB Pandey informed the High Court that show cause notices had been served to Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, and Ajay Devgn.
Additionally, the Court was apprised of Amitabh Bachchan's legal action against a gutka company, which continued to air his advertisement despite the termination of his contract with them.
