Tollywood filmmakers lack courage. This is what all the right-thinking people say. Many are of the opinion that Tollywood filmmakers play it safe and come with commercial potboilers rather than hard-hitting films. People after watching the films like The Kashmir Files, The Kerala Story, and 2018, are left wondering why can't and why don't Tollywood filmmakers come up with films like that. Bollywood and other film industries often came with films on Gujarat Riots, Dehi Riots, and Mumbai Riots. Movie lovers cannot forget how Mani Ratnam touched the Mumbai riots and Babri demolition in a subtle manner in Bombay.
Kangana Ranaut is coming with a film Emergency which is a bold take while Vivek Agnihotri earlier came up with The Tashkent Files on Lal Bahadur Shastri's death. People feel that Tollywood filmmakers lack the guts and spine and also courage to come up with such hard-hitting films. The sad fact is they did not even come with films on the Godavari floods which left many displaced and caused massive destruction. Now that 2018 turned out to be a hit, Tollywood makers may try to ape it.
Ram Gopal Varma has such guts but he comes with B-grade films on Chandra Babu and Pawan Kalyan bereft of any facts or extensive research. Revolutionary filmmaker R.Narayanamurthy comes with hard-hitting films but mostly he goes over the board with these dialogues rather than come up with realistic performances.
They have the fear of getting backlashed and blasted by certain communities and people and this fear is preventing them from making such films. The irony is top stars are now refusing to do films on Chatrapathi Sivaji for fear of showing Muslims in badlight but they are game for doing films on Akbar in Tollywood. When will Tollywood break these shackles and show their power.
