Another Big Disappointment In Lockdown

While coronavirus and the lockdown had huge negative impact on major films across the country, it has turned out to be a boon for several small to medium range films. OTT players offered fancy amounts to acquire digital rights for direct OTT release. Except for Gulabo Sitabo all other films released during the lockdown were small to medium range films.

Amrutharamam was the first film to hit OTT. However, the film received negative response. Jyothika’s Ponmagal Vandhal was released to good expectations. But, the JJ Fredrick directorial got mixed to negative talk.

Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Gulabo Sitabo directed by Shoojit Sircar was released last week to mixed response. Although the film had some funny and emotional sequences, sluggish narration played the spoilsport.

This week, Keerthy Suresh’s long delayed project Penguin hit the streaming portal amazon prime video. Though promotional content of the film hiked expectations, the film disappointed big time. Eashvar Karthic directorial has some spine-chilling scenes, but the second half, especially back story killed all the interest.

The back to back flops will somehow show its impact on films that are planned for direct OTT release. In fact, OTT players may not offer big amounts for next films!
