Union Minister Anurag Thakur, in a video statement, shed light on the staggering losses of 20,000 crores annually inflicted upon the film and entertainment sector due to movie piracy. He acknowledged the years of effort and dedication that producers and technicians invest in creating a film, only to suffer the devastating consequences of piracy.

To address this issue, the Cinematograph Amendment Bill 2023 was successfully passed in Parliament. The government has taken a proactive step by appointing nodal officers within the Ministry and the CBFC Mumbai office, as well as regional offices, to receive complaints concerning piracy and to instruct intermediaries to remove pirated content from various platforms promptly.

Furthermore, the government has pledged immediate action in response to complaints, and it has issued a stern warning to rogue pirates. Under the new law, they face the prospect of a three-year jail term and substantial financial penalties, delivering on the commitment to safeguard the Indian film industry.

The government's unwavering determination to protect the nation's soft power and its content from piracy is expected to serve as a formidable deterrent against illegal practices. This robust and proactive approach reflects a steadfast commitment to preserving the integrity of the film and entertainment industry in India.
