Praja Rajyam Party headed by K Chiranjeevi on Tuesday decided to go in for a tie-up with the Congress in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.
According to sources, the PRP leader learnt to have conducted marathon meetings at his residence with his party members over the alliance with Congress party and to elicit members’ views.
In the meeting, Chiranjeevi briefed his talks with Congress president Sonia Gandhi to the members. The meeting also decided to extend support the Congress for the Rajya Sabha elections, which are scheduled for June 14.
PRP, which has 18 MLAs including two rebels in the 295-member assembly, is keen on contesting the Rajya Sabha elections.
Unless the Congress supports it, the party cannot win a seat as a minimum of 42 votes are required for a candidate to get elected to the Upper House.According to sources, the meeting also discussed the alliance with Congress for local body elections.
"The PRP feels that if the alliance with the Congress is established for Rajya Sabha elections, it could be firmed up for the elections to urban body polls, which are due in September this year. There is a lot of optimism in our party about the tie-up with the Congress," a PRP member said.
