Praja Rajyam Party Political Affairs Committee Member K Vidyadhar Rao on Monday urged the government to construct new warehouses in the state to increase the storage capacity for foodgrains.
Talking to media persons, Mr Vidyadhar Rao pointed out that due to copious rainfalls, the projected grain output has been put at 12 lakh tons from West Godavari alone. He added that the district has empty warehouses in which only ten thousand tons of food grains can be stored.
Mr Vidyadhar Rao pointed out that wheat from Haryana and Punjab has taken up storage space of 60 thousand tons.
He urged the government to immediately take steps to solve the farmer’s problems by constructing new warehouses and emptying the old ones.
The PRP leader also said that his party president K Chiranjeevi will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in this regard and urge him to direct Central Government to take necessary actions.
Mr Vidyadhar Rao said that the rice which has been produced by Andhra Pradesh farmers has very good demand in the international market which can be preserved by constructing new warehouses.
The PRP leader also demanded that the government to purchase crops from farmer at least at Rs 1,000 per a quintal which is Minimum Support Price.
