Revanth Reddy to increase bus fares. The recent implementation of free bus travel for women in both Karnataka and Telangana, while popular with passengers, has raised concerns about the financial sustainability of state transport corporations.

In Karnataka, the Shakti scheme, launched in May 2023, has resulted in a staggering Rs 295 crore deficit for the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) in just a quarter. This has prompted KSRTC Chairman SR Srinivas to propose a fare hike of up to 20%, citing inflationary pressures and the need for financial stability.

Telangana, which followed suit with free travel for women after December 2023, is also likely to face similar challenges. While the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has dispelled rumors of an imminent fare hike due to increased toll charges, the combined burden of free travel and rising costs may make it difficult for the corporation to sustain losses indefinitely.

This situation highlights the complex dilemma of balancing public welfare initiatives with the financial well-being of state transport corporations. While free travel for women offers significant benefits, its long-term sustainability requires careful consideration.

Possible solutions could include exploring alternative funding models, optimizing operational efficiency, or seeking government subsidies to mitigate the financial strain. The coming months will reveal how these states navigate this challenge and ensure a balance between accessibility and affordability for all passengers.
