CBN to revamp volunteer systemThe future of Andhra Pradesh's volunteer system, a program that has been in place for five years, hangs in the balance following the formation of a coalition government. While the system initially aimed to bridge the gap between government and citizens, its utility and political neutrality have come under scrutiny.

The volunteer program, which saw the appointment of over 2.5 lakh individuals during the YCP regime, has been lauded for its benefits to beneficiaries. However, its involvement in local body elections sparked controversy, leading to calls for its separation from political influence.

With the TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu promising to retain the system and increase the honorarium to ₹10,000, uncertainty lingers amongst volunteers. Concerns over their future are compounded by reports of delayed pensions and resignations by over one lakh volunteers.

The coalition government is currently reviewing the program, acknowledging its potential but emphasizing the need for reform. There is a consensus on continuing the program, but the structure and responsibilities are being re-evaluated. Discussions include reducing the volunteer-to-population ratio from one per fifty households to one per hundred households, introducing minimum degree qualifications, and revising accountability structures.

The TDP's proposal to leverage the program for party benefit has drawn criticism from the YCP, who accuse the coalition of using the program to reward TDP sympathizers. The TDP maintains that there is no harm in benefiting from the program, while emphasizing that their policy will be revealed soon.

This uncertainty surrounding the volunteer system reflects the complex political landscape in Andhra Pradesh. The coalition government must strike a delicate balance between utilizing the program's potential for public service while ensuring its neutrality and effectiveness. The ultimate outcome will likely shape the future of this controversial yet potentially powerful initiative.
