Gang Leader Review, What’s Behind?

Natural Star Nani’s last movie Jersey despite getting unanimous positive talk had ended as an above average grosser. He teamed up with director Vikram Kumar lost his sheen with his last couple of films bombing at box office. Will the duo get back on hit track with their first collaboration project Gang Leader?

Gang Leader Story Review:

Five ladies of different age groups hire a revenge novel writer Pencil Parthasarathy (Nani) to assist them in taking revenge on sixth person who killed their relatives in a massive bank robbery of Rs 300 Crores. Who is the culprit? Why the other five persons who don’t have any criminal background in the past took part in the crime? What’s India’s top car racer Dev’s (Kartikeya) connection with the robbery? Do Pencil have any emotional connect with the robbery like his gang of ladies? Will the gang ever take the revenge?

Gang Leader Artists, Technicians Review:

It’s a novel story inspired by true events as mentioned by the film unit. There’s however blunder in the root of the story which looked to be a cooked up one and also lacked emotional connect for audience to sympathize on the gang of ladies. More importantly, we can’t connect to the story when protagonist doesn’t have any strong connection to the main incident or back story.

Director Vikram Kumar showed his mark in narrating the revenge drama in a hilarious manner, although he took enough of cinematic liberty in the process of Nani Gang’s investigation to reach the antagonist. Nani makes his entry only after 20 to 25 minutes and Kartikeya will appear just before intermission, which bit too late for a commercial film. Moreover, it’s an open screenplay as the criminal’s identity is revealed in the first half itself. Though first half lacked engaging elements, second half was far better and had some twists in the end.

Anirudh Ravichandran’s music is a big asset. While the sounds tracks were melodious and enchanting, especially Hoyna Hoyna, background score adds additional impact to the visuals. Miroslaw Kuba Brozek’s cinematography was top class. Edited by Naveen Nooli was not sharp enough, particularly the first half could have been trimmed. Production Values of Mythri Movie Makers are high in standard as usual.

Onto performances, it’s a tailor made role for Nani who excelled the role of revenge writer Pencil. Though his mannerisms were routine, he could make us laugh in numerous occasions. He didn’t go overboard and there’s only one fight in the film. Priyanka Arul Mohan with the features of girl next door looked decent in traditional outfits. Senior artists Lakshmi and Saranya Ponvannan tickle funny bones with their innocent acts. Kartikeya Gummakonda is one of the major positive features. He leaves his impact although with iniquitous acts, though he is given limited screen space. Priyadarshi was regular as hero’s friend, Vennela Kishore was funny as a homosexual and Satya was cool as Kartikeya’s friend. The little one Praanya who played the role of Chinnu was cute.

Gang Leader Review, Rating Analysis:

Revenge dramas and thrillers are narrated in most possible serious way. But, Vikram K Kumar who is known for intellectual writing and sensible taking opted to his own path to depict his story. The set up indeed has enough scope to generate hilarity, but he gratuitously included heavy drama.

First half begins on interesting note with a bank robbery which changes fate of five females who lost their family members in the incident. We will see Nani only after 20 minutes after Lakshmi in a lengthy and over dramatic episode convinces other four females to join her in taking revenge on the criminal with help of this revenge writer. Nani and Gang’s investigation to discover the criminal was a funny ride. The process however was so unrealistic. It’s intermission with the gang finding the criminal.

Excitement quotient increases in the second half, though villain’s identity is revealed. Meanwhile, the growing bond between the gang and the leader is shown beautifully and persuasively. The romantic track was also lovable. Old age home episode was again bit dramatic and it’s another twist in the story. After the only fight in the story, there’s another but funny twist in the tale with police finding a dog’s belt in the crime scene of robbery.

Overall, Gang Leader is a decent family entertainer. Nani and Kartikeya gave their best, wherein technical team also put in good efforts. Loopholes in the story, sluggishness in the first half and over dose of drama are the major drawbacks. CJ goes with 2.5 stars, though the film is expected to rake good numbers in its first week with no big competition at box office.
