Ramayana: Sai Pallavi and Rakul Face Controversy

The promotional campaign for Ramayana is increasingly drawing attention for reasons beyond the film itself. After Sai Pallavi’s remarks about Ravana triggered criticism on social media, Rakul Preet Singh has now landed in a similar controversy over her portrayal of Surpanakha.

In a viral interview clip, Rakul described Surpanakha as a misunderstood and layered character, pointing out that she was the reason the war took place. While the actress appears to be discussing the character's importance to the story, sections of social media have questioned this interpretation. Some users have even accused the film's team of trying to portray the epic's negative characters in a favourable light.

This comes just days after Sai Pallavi said that Ravana was "not all bad" while explaining the moral lesson of recognising the good and bad within oneself. Her comments also received mixed reactions, with some defending her explanation and others objecting to her choice of words.

The two incidents have brought an unexpected focus on the actresses' interpretations of the epic. With Ramayana arriving in theatres on November 5, the challenge for the team is to keep the conversation centred on the film rather than allowing promotional remarks to overshadow it.
