Kamal Haasan Marudhanayagam May Return

Kamal Haasan’s Marudhanayagam, one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious unfinished projects, is reportedly back in discussion. Launched in 1997, the historical epic was conceived as a grand portrayal of 18th century warrior Muhammad Yusuf Khan, also known as Marudhanayagam. The project was eventually halted after serious financial and production difficulties.
The film’s spectacular launch remains memorable, with Queen Elizabeth II visiting the sets at MGR Film City, Chennai, on October 16, 1997. Then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi also attended the event. The production was reportedly planned on an enormous ₹80–85 crore budget, unprecedented for Indian cinema at that time.
Marudhanayagam reportedly struggled after its international financial backing collapsed, eventually forcing production to stop. Kamal later made several attempts to revive the project, including exploring international partnerships. He has also acknowledged that technological advances could now make the film more achievable, although casting and financing remain major considerations.
According to the latest industry buzz, director Atlee is said to be exploring financial backing and discussing ways to revive Kamal Haasan’s long cherished project. However, there is no confirmed announcement yet regarding Atlee’s involvement as director. Whether Kamal approves a new filmmaker, changes the cast, or personally leads the project remains to be seen.
