Actor Vishal’s directorial debut Magudam, released as Makutam in Telugu on August 14, 2026, opened to a disastrous response. All India gross stayed under ₹1 crore. Advance bookings totaled around ₹56 lakh, with ₹40 lakh from Tamil and ₹16 lakh from Telugu, showing weak pre-release traction and awareness.

Multiple shows were canceled across Tamil Nadu and Andhra due to poor turnout. Reports emerged of low audience presence and fan altercations outside theaters including Chennai’s Kamala Theatre. Negative reviews and zero buzz hurt footfalls. Trade analysts called it one of Vishal’s weakest openings despite his action star image.

Magudam marks Vishal’s first film as director and lead. The action drama centers on Krupakar, a medical representative, played by Vishal, with Dushara Vijayan and Anjali as female leads. GV Prakash Kumar composed music. The plot aimed at mass appeal but failed to connect with viewers.

Critics cited outdated screenplay, routine narration and loud background score. Word-of-mouth spread quickly on social media, further impacting collections. Industry insiders note the lack of promotions and competition affected performance. With canceled shows and poor reviews, Magudam / Makutam struggled to recover opening day, raising concerns for Vishal’s next projects.
