Tamil Nadu Theatres Seek Big Changes Under CM Vijay

Tamil Nadu theatre owners are asking for new rules to help the film business. After C. Joseph Vijay became Chief Minister on May 10, 2026, exhibitors met him with their requests. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader is now hearing ideas from theatre groups. The cinema business has faced losses for years. Owners say new steps can bring people back to halls. Many small theatres have closed since 2020. The groups want support to keep screens open and create more jobs.
A main request is to run theatres 24 hours a day. Owners want to show films all day and night based on crowd demand. This can help earn more money during big star releases. Theatres also want the return of early morning shows. Fans love 4:00 AM and 5:00 AM First-Day-First-Show screenings. These shows were stopped for three years. Now theatres start only at 9:00 AM or later. Owners say early shows build buzz and help ticket sales. They believe the tradition is part of Tamil cinema culture.
Actor Kamal Haasan also met CM Vijay with a plan to help Tamil cinema. He gave a six-point plan for the industry. The plan asks for a state OTT app with low prices for Tamil films. It also asks to remove the 4 percent local body tax on tickets. Another point is to keep an 8-week gap before films go to OTT. This can protect box office income. The plan also asks for a strong team to stop piracy. It also wants up to 10 percent support for films shot mostly in Tamil Nadu.
Theatre owners and film stars are now waiting for the government’s reply. They hope CM Vijay will act soon on these points. The industry wants quick steps to save theatres and bring back fans. Big films are lined up for 2026 and 2027. Better rules can help both small halls and multiplexes. The next few months will show if these changes happen.
