The Oscars have made a big decision. For the 99th Academy Awards in 2027, AI-made content will not be allowed in acting and writing. The Academy wants real human work to win, not computer-made work. This comes after many people in the film world worried about AI taking over jobs. The new rule says an actor can get an Oscar only if a real person acted in the role and agreed to it. So fully AI-made roles, like the recent indie film As Deep as the Grave that used AI to bring back Val Kilmer’s voice and face, cannot compete.
The same rule is for scripts too. Both Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay must be written by humans. AI can help writers, like checking grammar or giving ideas, but the final script must have human credit. The Academy said human creativity is the main thing for an award. Many directors and writers online are happy with this step. They feel it protects artists. Some tech fans say it is too strict, but most agree that awards should go to people, not machines.
The Academy also made other changes. Now more than one film from the same country can enter the same category. This is good news for countries like India, South Korea, and France that make many great films each year. Also, actors can now get nominated for more than one role in the same year. If someone does two strong roles, both can be in the race. This helps talented actors who work on many films.
These new rules will start with the 2027 Oscars. Experts say this will change how awards work. It shows the Academy values real acting and real writing. AI can still be used for VFX, editing, and sound, but not for the main performance or story. With this step, the Oscars are drawing a clear line between tech help and human art. Filmmakers now know the game. If you want an Oscar for acting or writing, a real person has to do the job.
