The Justice K. Hema Committee report on the condition of women in the Malayalam film industry has revealed shocking details of a "mafia" ruled by top actors, directors, and producers, who exploit and harass women actors. The report, released after a long delay, highlights the ineffective Internal Complaints Committee and the need for new measures to protect women's interests. Despite attempts to delay its release, the 289-page report exposes the dark side of the industry, where women face casting couch, intimidation, and exploitation.

The report details harrowing testimonies from women actors, including being forced to take shots with problematic individuals, facing threats, and being subjected to intimate scenes without consent. It also reveals the prevalence of casting couch, where women are coerced into sleeping with influential individuals for roles. Even basic necessities like good quality food on shooting locations require compromises.

The report sheds light on the male-dominated industry's exploitation of women, including producers, and the fear that drives them to bring family members to sets. The glittering surface of the industry hides the ugly truth of exploitation, harassment, and intimidation. The delay in releasing the report, submitted in 2019, raises suspicions of attempts to suppress its findings.

The Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) has responded cautiously, stating they are unaware of the report's details. The Pinarayi Vijayan government's response to the report remains to be seen. The charity show attended by AMMA members on the day of the report's release has drawn attention away from the report's damning revelations. The industry's response to the report's findings will be crucial in addressing the systemic exploitation and harassment of women in the Malayalam film industry.
