Michael Jackson almost sang for Rajinikanth Enthiran. In a recent meet-and-greet in Malaysia, celebrated music composer AR Rahman shared a heartwarming anecdote about his encounter with the late Michael Jackson.
Rahman revealed that he met Jackson in Los Angeles in 2009 after winning an Oscar for "Jai Ho" from "Slumdog Millionaire." The meeting was a culmination of a previous attempt to connect, with Rahman initially requesting a meeting with Jackson but holding off until after his Oscar win.
During their meeting, Rahman described Jackson as "very kind" and shared that they discussed music and world peace. Jackson even invited Rahman to collaborate on a future "We Are The World" project and introduced him to his children.
The encounter inspired a potential collaboration with Indian filmmaker Shankar. Rahman shared that Shankar, having heard about the meeting, inquired about the possibility of Jackson singing for his upcoming film "Enthiran" starring Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai.
"Shankar sir asked me if he would sing for the film. I said, wow, will he sing a Tamil song? I asked. He said, whatever you say, we’ll do together." However, the collaboration was tragically cut short by Jackson's passing in June of that year.
Despite the missed opportunity, "Enthiran" became a massive success with a soundtrack entirely composed by Rahman.
Regarding Shankar's recent choice to collaborate with Anirudh Ravichander for "Indian 2," Shankar clarified that Rahman's busy schedule with projects like "2.0" and other commitments led to the decision.
Rahman currently has a diverse lineup of projects in multiple languages, including Tamil films like "Raayan," "Thug Life," and "Genie," Hindi films like "Chhava" and "Lahore 1947," and Telugu projects like Ram Charan's next. He is also composing for an Arabic film titled "Baab."
This glimpse into Rahman's encounter with Michael Jackson provides a fascinating insight into the potential collaborations that could have been. It also showcases the depth of his artistic talent and his dedication to creating impactful music across various languages and cultures.
